how do i make this waterproof?\?
i have this silver tote bag that is made of fake leather (or at least, i think it is). It's too flashy for me, so I'm going to cover it with a nice rose pink lace. I was thinking of gluing the lace on with modge podge, but i heard it wasn't waterproof. Since I'm going to use this bag a lot, it must be waterproof. Is there something I can spray over my finished prodcut to keep it from breaking down over time? Would the spray used on shoes work? thanks <3
ModPodge is a "decoupage medium" but comes in various versions. All will be water-resistant once dry if you happen to be in the rain, etc, but few permanent white glues (which is what ModPodge is, though thinned down) will be totally water*proof* if actually soaked in water over time. ModPodge does make one version that's more water-resistant than their others though. You could also coat your lace (and background) with clear "textile medium" though. https://www.google.com/images?q=textile+medium That's one of the "acrylic mediums" (often used to mix into acrylic paints to change their characteristics a bit), and the one that's intended for use on fabric. It will dry highly water-resistant since it is okay for washing. Textile medium will also stay more flexible after drying than something else that would be highly water-resistant like clear polyurethane or even epoxy resin (those will dry stiff/hard). (Textile medium is also adhesive like all the other acrylic paints/finishes/mediums/etc.) You can also buy water-resistant sprays for furniture (3-M, for example) and even shoes (though those may be waxes instead) but they may have stuff in them that you don't necessarily want to be breathing or wearing much they're finding out these days. And spray acrylic may not end up looking the way you want because of it's uneven coverage, etc. Try to test whatever you want to use on both the lace and the fake leather. They may need to be sealed before using certain things on them (at least for a heavy first coat) since they may be porous and absorb too much of the finish, darkening the color, etc.
