For my first sewing machine should I buy an expensive Janome top model or a more mid range model?

I am planning on purchasing my first sewing machine. I narrowed it down to 2 models but my local store does not have either of the models I want. I will therefor be forced to place an order via an internet dealer.

I was considering the Janome DC2010 or the Janome Refurbised 115215 both of these machines may be purchased from Overstock.

If I decided to purchase a higher end Machine I was thinking of the Janome MC 6600P.

I have never sewed a day in my life, but would like to sew silk & satin dresses as well as hem jeans, sew bags using heavy canvas materials, & make quilts. I thought it may be better to buy a Very Good machine to start with so I don't end up having to buy another machine a few years from now.

I would appreciate all comments, as I am a newbie when it comes to sewing.

I've sewn on the DC2010 and was pleased with its performance; thought it was easy to use and the buttonholes are decent. I don't know the 115215, and the overstock site does not mention 1 step vs 4 step buttonholes... 1 step are much easier than 4 for most newbies. Both models are "retired" according to the Janome website. I don't think I'd go fancier than either of these models -- garment and bag construction rarely goes beyond the need for straight, zigzag, stretch, blindhem, stretch blindhem and a couple of buttonhole styles. It's actually pretty rare for most folks to use the decorative stitches on their sewing machines.

None of these are machines for heavy canvas except on an "every once in awhile" basis. If you're going to do a lot of that, I'd buy a machine designed for that purpose, probably a commercial lockstitch.

My first thought is that most of us who do a lot of sewing have both sewing machine and serger -- sergers are sort of the microwaves of the sewing world -- though they don't do a good job with zippers and buttonholes are nearly impossible, they simplify many, many sewing tasks. So if you don't have a big budget for machines, you might want to dial back on the sewing machine and start saving for a good serger. At this moment in my sewing journey, if you told me I had to give up either the sewing machine or the serger, the sewing machine would be out the door... I can certainly make buttonholes and set zippers by hand. The real truth of the matter, though, is that many of us have a couple of machines... often a simple mechanical machine to take to classes or travel with, a more complex main machine, and some specialty machines like sergers, coverstitchers, embroidery machines, etc, acquired as the need or want hits us.

If you're tossing all your available resources at a sewing machine and won't be able to buy good shears, basic pressing tools, some basic lessons and books, then I'd urge you to dial back on machine features in favor of some of the other basics you'll need. If you've got the budget, however, I think you're looking at a couple of good machines.
